Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)
What is polycystic kidney disease?
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a genetic condition where many fluid‑filled cysts grow in the kidneys over time. These cysts can enlarge the kidneys and gradually reduce kidney function.
Common features and risk factors
- Family history of PKD
- High blood pressure
- Enlarged kidneys on imaging
- Cysts in other organs (such as the liver) in some people
- Risk of aneurysms in certain families
Symptoms to watch for
- Flank or back pain
- Blood in the urine
- Frequent kidney infections or stones
- High blood pressure
- Fullness or discomfort in the belly
How we diagnose PKD
At Total Kidney, we may use:
- Ultrasound, CT, or MRI to look for kidney cysts
- Family history review
- Blood tests to check kidney function
- Genetic testing in select cases
How Total Kidney manages PKD
While there is no cure, we can slow progression and manage complications:
- Careful blood pressure control
- Monitoring kidney function and cyst growth
- Managing pain, infections, and stones
- Discussing medications that may slow disease in eligible patients
- Screening for related issues when appropriate (such as aneurysms in high‑risk families)
